Thank you for looking at my Vintage Hill-Rom 89 FY mid-century wooden chair made of walnut. Hill-Rom, the company behind the chair, has a long history of creating medical equipment and furniture dating back to the early 20th century in Batesville, Indiana.
Hill-Rom, founded in 1915 by William S. Hillenbrand, originally started out as a manufacturer of hospital beds. The company grew rapidly and became well-known for producing a wide range of medical furniture and equipment, such as hospital beds, examination tables, and various types of chairs designed for medical use. Over time, Hill-Rom became a leader in patient care and medical furnishings.
In the mid-20th century, especially from the 1940s to the 1960s, medical furniture underwent significant changes. The 89 FY chair model is believed to fall into this era of design, which was marked by a blend of functional design with a growing emphasis on ergonomics, ease of use, and patient comfort. Medical furniture was designed to be practical but also streamlined in its appearance, with a certain industrial aesthetic that aligned with midcentury modern design trends. Please refer to my photos – you will see the maker’s mark stamped into the wooden frame (89 FY).
Many medical chairs from this period were made with wooden frames like the 89 FY, which were not only durable but also had a more polished, refined look compared to the heavy metal and steel frames that became common later. Wood was often chosen for its warmth and comfort, especially in environments like hospitals where the atmosphere could be stark or cold. These chairs were used in hospital waiting rooms, dorms, or private rooms and now are offered as collectible mid-century vintage pieces.
The Hill-Rom 89 FY would likely have been designed with features that catered to both patient comfort and healthcare providers' needs. This could have included:
• Wooden frame with a solid, sturdy construction.
• Adjustable components to suit different patient needs.
• A clean, minimalistic design, typical of midcentury style, focusing on functional elegance.
• Ergonomic aspects designed to ensure ease of use in medical settings, perhaps offering reclining capabilities or specific contours to assist with patient positioning.
Today, midcentury medical furniture, including chairs like the Hill-Rom 89 FY, can be valuable to collectors and interior designers looking for vintage or retro pieces with a unique history. These chairs are often appreciated for their craftsmanship, comfort, and design, making them sought after for restoration or as part of medical or vintage design collections and currently sell in the range of $300 to $900.
Please review my photos. You will also see this chair was put into use at Lutheran Hospital. You may also note the piece of masking tape with two hand-written names (could be the two who may have shared the chair in an office space).
Made with a solid wooden frame of walnut, this sturdy vintage chair sports its original upholstered and removable cushion which rests on wooden slats which were part of the construction of the chair itself – the chair makes a great addition to a wide variety of decorating styles including vintage, traditional or modern.
Though I was tempted to re-upholster the seat cushion, I held back in case a collector would prefer to own the chair in its original state – the cushion would, however, be an easy project to reupholster if you are looking for a slightly new look.
Here are the approximate dimensions:
• Width of the chair at the front: 23”
• Width of the chair at the back: 20”
• Front to back of the seat: 18”
• Front to back of the entire chair: 26”
• Height of chair: 35”
• Height of seat from floor: 18”
• Material: Solid Walnut
